The stay

Asilia Africa’s award-winning boutique camp, The Highlands, is an architectural marvel perched on the edge of Olmoti Crater’s forest, offering a rich, exclusive Ngorongoro experience. The camp features eight uniquely constructed domed suites made of canvas and perspex, surrounded by lush forest vegetation and breathtaking views of the rolling hills and distant volcanic mountains.

Guests wake to the muted light of the forest canopy filtering through the perspex panels of their domed suite. Wood-burning stoves take the chill from the morning air, while hot showers and private bathrooms provide comfort after long days on the crater floor. A small spa with its own sauna offers quiet recovery, and the generator-backed solar system keeps Wi-Fi and lighting steady throughout the evening. Laundry returned each day keeps luggage light.

Placed just beyond the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, the camp becomes a measured pause within a wider Tanzanian itinerary. Morning and afternoon game drives can be balanced with time spent on the lodge’s elevated decks, where the eye travels across the caldera to the distant volcanic cones. The eight suites, each with its own stove and en-suite facilities, give travellers a private base from which to explore the crater’s wildlife concentrations before moving on to the next stage of their journey.
