Tengile means tranquil in Zulu, and andBeyond built the lodge to the word: nine suites stretched along a shaded bank of the Sand River, each a 200-square-metre run of sunken lounge, private pool and river-facing bath, designed so low and quiet that the bush seems to continue straight through the architecture. It opened in 2018 as andBeyond's flagship and still feels newer than most lodges finished last year. The river in front does the heavy lifting. Tengile's traverse covers the southwestern Sabi Sand along the Sand River's most reliable stretch, water that holds elephant, buffalo and a supporting cast of nyala and bushbuck through the driest months, and above them the reserve's signature: leopards habituated over generations, followed calmly at close range. Four nights is the sweet spot for a single-lodge Sabi Sand stay: three full days of twice-daily drives with the same guide-and-tracker team, a walking morning, and enough unscheduled hours to let the suite and the river do what they were designed for. Stay 1

Johannesburg to the Sand River

The 55 minute Airlink flight to Skukuza and a 45 minute road transfer deliver you to a lodge you nearly miss: Tengile keeps itself low along the riverbank, and the suite unfolds inward, sunken lounge, pool, bath aimed at the water. The afternoon drive introduces the traverse, and its leopards rarely leave a first day empty-handed.

The Leopard Beat

Your tracker reads the river crossings at first light and the morning follows the freshest drag mark or pugline, often ending beneath a leopard reorganising an impala in a jackalberry. Brunch on the riverbank, siesta in the sunken lounge, then the afternoon drive runs into darkness with the spotlight sweeping the ebony thickets.

Stay 3

On Foot, Then Off Duty

A walking morning slows the reserve to ground level: tracks annotated by your guide, dung beetles at their engineering, giraffe met at a respectful diagonal. The afternoon is deliberately unscheduled, the suite's pool and the river's traffic filling it without effort, before an evening drive toward whichever lion pride the radio favours.

Stay 4

The Full Last Day

Two long drives spend the final day well: the morning follows up the week's running stories, the afternoon pushes the traverse's quieter southern loops for cheetah and wild dog, and sundowners land on a rise above the Sand River with the lodge's gin trolley doing its rounds. Dinner is in the winecellar or under the stars, your call.

River to Johannesburg

A last river-bath morning and an unhurried breakfast before the road returns you to Skukuza for the midday flight to Johannesburg and evening international connections, or the direct Cape Town service if the trip continues south. Is four nights enough for the Sabi Sand?

For a single lodge, yes: it gives three full days of drives, which in this reserve reliably delivers leopard, lion and the general Big Five spread, plus a walking morning without rushing anything. Travellers wanting two contrasting camps or the wider Kruger system should look at six to eight nights; as a first or a repeat taste of the Sabi Sand, four is the honest number.

How do you get to Tengile?

Airlink flies Johannesburg to Skukuza, inside the Kruger, in about 55 minutes; Tengile is then roughly 45 minutes by road, and both legs are included. Skukuza also connects directly with Cape Town, so the lodge pairs neatly with the Cape on one ticket. Federal Airlines charters to nearby airstrips can be arranged as an alternative.

When is the best time to visit?

May to September for the classic dry season, when the Sand River becomes the neighbourhood's water supply and the viewing concentrates in front of the lodge. October to April greens the bush and brings lambing impala, storm skies and softer rates. Leopard, the traverse's speciality, features steadily in every month of the year.
