The journey

Angama means suspended in mid-air in Swahili, and the camp earns the name. It sits on the lip of the Oloololo Escarpment, three hundred metres above the floor of the Mara Triangle, and every one of its tented suites is a wall of glass facing that drop. The view runs to the Tanzanian border on a clear morning. Below it lies the Triangle, the western third of the Masai Mara, managed separately since 2001 by the Mara Conservancy. Vehicle numbers are capped, off-road driving is banned and rangers enforce both, so the lion prides, cheetah and elephant here are watched by a handful of cars rather than a ring of forty. From July to October the migration crosses the Mara River within the Triangle. Five nights at one address is the point. It buys full days on the plain with a packed lunch, a morning walking the escarpment with Maasai guides, lunch at the site where the Out of Africa picnic scene was filmed, and time in the camp's photographic studio to make the pictures better than you managed alone.

Stay 1

Wilson to the Escarpment

A transfer across Nairobi to Wilson, then 45 minutes southwest over the Rift wall. The vehicle climbs the escarpment road to Angama, where the suites turn out to be glass boxes hung over a three-hundred-metre drop. Lunch on the deck with the Triangle spread below, then the first drive descends onto the plain.

Stay 2

The Triangle Floor

A full day below with a picnic packed. The Triangle's lion prides hold ground along the river, cheetah use the short grass toward the border, and elephant families work the marshes late in the afternoon. With vehicle numbers capped, a leopard in a fig tree draws three cars instead of thirty, which changes the whole experience.

Stay 3

The River

Down to the Mara River, where hippo pods crowd the pools and crocodile lie along the sandbanks looking prehistoric and patient. From July to October the guides work the crossing points and wait. Lunch today is the set piece: laid out at the escarpment spot where the Out of Africa picnic scene was filmed.

Stay 4

Up Top

A morning on the escarpment instead of below it: walking the ridge with a Maasai guide, visiting the shamba that grows the camp's vegetables, and looking down on the plain from the height the vultures use. Balloon flights leave before dawn if booked ahead. The evening drive returns to the floor for the cats.

Stay 5

The Fifth Day

The day that justifies staying put: guides go back to whatever the week left unfinished, a pride with new cubs, the cheetah brothers, or the crossing point that nearly went yesterday. An hour in the photographic studio afterwards turns the results into pictures worth printing. Dinner is out under the stars with the Maasai choir.

Stay 6

Escarpment to Nairobi

Coffee on the deck while the Triangle wakes three hundred metres below, then down the escarpment road to the airstrip and the 45 minute flight to Wilson, connecting to evening international departures. Five nights in the one camp everyone photographs from the outside, and a week's worth of the Mara's least crowded third.

How much does a 6-day Angama Mara safari cost?

From USD 14,780 per person sharing, rising to about USD 17,580 in the July to October peak. International flights to Africa are excluded.

What is the Mara Triangle and why does it matter?

The Triangle is the western third of the Masai Mara, bounded by the Mara River and the Oloololo Escarpment, managed by the not-for-profit Mara Conservancy since 2001. It caps vehicle numbers, bans off-road driving and patrols hard against poaching. The wildlife is the same as the busier eastern sector, but a lion sighting here typically draws three or four vehicles rather than thirty.

When can you see the migration river crossings?

Roughly July to October, when the wildebeest and zebra move up from the Serengeti. Crossings happen on the Mara River within the Triangle and cannot be timed: herds gather on a bank for hours, then commit or turn back. Guides drive out early and wait. August and September are the most reliable months, though the resident game is superb year-round.

Is five nights in one camp too long for the Mara?

The Triangle is large enough that drives cover different country daily, and Angama fills the middle hours deliberately: escarpment walks with Maasai guides, a visit to the community shamba that supplies the kitchen, the photographic studio, the pool and a beading workshop. Most guests report the fifth day producing the trip's best sighting, precisely because there was time to wait for it.

Are international flights included?

No. International flights to and from Africa are excluded and booked separately, arriving at Nairobi's Jomo Kenyatta airport. Included are the return light-aircraft flights from Wilson Airport, about 45 minutes each way, with a 15 kg soft-bag luggage limit per person. Allow roughly an hour to transfer between Nairobi's two airports.

Is the Masai Mara a malaria area?

Yes, year-round, with risk highest during and after the rains in April, May and November. Prophylaxis is recommended for every visit; arrange it with a travel clinic about six weeks before departure. The camp provides nets and repellent. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you arrive from a country with transmission risk.
