Not every trip to Kenya needs a game drive. The coast has its own case to make, and this week makes it at the affordable end without giving up much at all. Kinondo Kwetu opens it, a Swedish-owned house on Galu Beach at Diani's quiet southern end, where the sand runs wide and mostly empty and the family who run it treat guests more like house visitors than customers. There are horses to ride along the tideline, a dhow for the reef, and a Kaya sacred forest next door that the Mijikenda have protected for centuries. Then north to Watamu and Hemingways, an old-school fishing hotel above a bay inside a marine national park protected since 1968. The coral is in real condition, turtles nest on the sand between March and June, and the whole place has the pleasant unhurriedness of somewhere that has been doing this since 1988. December to March is hot, calm and clear. July to October is cooler and dry, and pairs neatly with a Mara safari. April and May are the long rains, when much of the coast shuts.

Stay 1

Arrival on Galu Beach

Diani's airstrip is twenty-five minutes from Kinondo Kwetu, at the quiet southern end where Galu Beach runs wide and almost empty. The house is Swedish-run and feels like one: no reception desk, lunch when you want it, and a lawn between you and the sand. The afternoon is a swim and an early night.

Stay 2

Horses and the Tideline

Low tide exposes a hard sand flat that runs for miles, and the house keeps horses for exactly this: an hour or two along the water with nobody else on it. Afterwards there is the pool, the hammocks, and a dhow trip to the reef if the wind behaves. Dinner is whatever came off the boat.

Stay 3

The Sacred Forest

Kaya Kinondo sits next door, one of the last coastal forest patches the Mijikenda protected as a sacred site, and a community guide walks you through it in an hour, explaining the rules and the trees. The colobus project up the road runs rope bridges over the coast road. The afternoon returns to doing nothing on purpose.

Stay 4

North to Watamu

A morning swim, then the transfer via Mombasa and the flight north to Malindi, forty minutes above Watamu. Hemingways looks out over a bay inside the marine park and has been at it since 1988, which shows in the service and the fishing boats out front. The tide goes a long way out here; the pools it leaves are worth an hour.

Stay 5

Reef and Ruins

The morning dhow runs out over coral protected since 1968, where turtles are routine and the fish life is thick enough to make an hour disappear. The afternoon goes inland fifteen minutes to Gede, a thirteenth-century Swahili town of coral-rag walls and mosques standing under forest, full of golden-rumped elephant shrews and very few people.

Stay 6

Watamu to Malindi

A last swim in water already warm at seven, breakfast facing the bay, then the forty minute transfer to Malindi for the flight to Nairobi or Mombasa and onward connections. Five nights on a coast that most itineraries bolt on for two, at a price that leaves room to come back and do it again properly.

How much does a 6-day Kenyan coast retreat cost?

From USD 3,680 per person sharing, rising to about USD 3,880 in the December to March peak, making it the most affordable itinerary we run in Kenya. It covers five nights across Kinondo Kwetu and Hemingways Watamu, full board with drinks at the former, bed and breakfast at the latter, a snorkelling excursion, marine park fees, the internal flight and all transfers.

When is the best time for the Kenyan coast?

December to March is hot, calm and clearest for snorkelling, and also the busiest. July to October is cooler and dry, with a breeze off the ocean, and slots naturally alongside a Mara safari in migration season. April and May bring the long rains, when the sea clouds with runoff and a number of coastal properties close entirely for the season.

How is the snorkelling at Watamu?

Good, and better than most of the East African coast, because Watamu Marine National Park has been protected since 1968, among the oldest in Africa. Expect turtles as a routine sighting, dense reef fish and clear water outside the rainy months. Whale sharks pass offshore roughly November to February, and turtles nest on the beaches from March to June.

What is a Kaya forest?

Kayas are patches of coastal forest that the Mijikenda peoples protected for centuries as sacred sites containing their fortified villages, and several are now UNESCO World Heritage listed. Kaya Kinondo, next to the Diani hotel, is one of the few open to visitors, with a guide from the community explaining the trees, the rules and the history. It takes about an hour.

Are international flights included?

No. International flights to and from Africa are excluded and booked separately. Most travellers connect via Nairobi to Diani or Mombasa, and in high season some European and Gulf carriers fly direct to Mombasa. The internal Diani-Malindi flight and all coastal road transfers are included in the published price.

Is the coast a malaria area?

Yes, year-round, with risk highest during and after the rains. Prophylaxis is recommended; arrange it with a travel clinic about six weeks before you fly. Both properties provide nets, screening and repellent. A yellow fever certificate is required only if you arrive from a country with transmission risk.
